But what is there to living
if a man cannot hear the lonely cry of the thrush
or the arguments of the frogs around a pond at night?
但人若不能靜聽畫眉的歌唱和池蛙的爭鳴， 
又有什麼可活呢？

I have heard stories
of a thousand rotting buffaloes on the prairie, 
left by the white men who shot them from a passing train.
I do not understand. 
For us, the beasts are our brothers, 
and we kill only to stay alive. 
If we sell him this land, 
the white man must do the same, 
for the animals are our brothers. 
What is man without the beast? 
Even the earthworm keeps the earth soft 
for man to walk upon. 
If all the beasts were gone, 
men would die from great loneliness. 
For whatever happens to the beasts, happens to man 
For we are all of one breath. 
我曾聽說， 
上千上萬的野牛屍體潰爛在大草原， 
乃是白人從經過的火車中射殺所致。 
我不懂。
對我們來說，野獸是我們的兄弟， 
我們只為求活才去獵殺牠們。 
如果我們賣這土地給白人， 
白人務必同樣， 
因為動物是我們的兄弟。 
如果沒有了野獸，人又算什麼呢？ 
即使蚯蚓，也使土地鬆軟溫柔， 
讓人可以踩在上面。 
如果獸類盡失，人類亦將寂寞而死。
因為發生在獸類身上的，必將發生在人類身上， 
因為萬物都屬於同一呼吸。 

Teach your children
what we have taught our children, 
that the earth is our mother. 
Whatever befalls the earth, 
befalls the sons of the earth. 
If men spit upon the ground, 
they spit upon themselves. 
This we know. 
The earth does not belong to the white man, 
the white man belongs to the earth. 
This we know. 
All things are connected 
like the blood 
which unites our family. 
If we kill the snakes, 
the field mice will multiply and destroy our corn. 
All things are connected. 
Whatever befalls the earth, 
befalls the sons and daughters of the earth. 
Man did not weave the web of life; 
he is merely a strand in it. 
Whatever he does to the web, 
he does to himself. 
教育你們的孩子，就如我們教育我們的孩子：
這土地是我們的母親。 
發生在大地身上的事， 
必將發生在她孩子的身上。 
如果人唾棄土地， 
他就是唾棄自己。 
這是我們知道的。
土地不屬於白人， 
白人卻屬於土地。 
這是我們知道的。 
萬物都互相關聯，
就如同一家族的血液。
如果我們殺蛇， 
則田鼠橫行，摧毀五穀。 
萬物相連。 
凡是發生在地球身上的事， 
必將發生在地球兒女身上。 
生命之網並非由人類編織， 
他只是網上的一線。 
凡是他對這網所做的， 
他乃是對自己所做。 

…we do not understand what living becomes 
when the buffalos are all slaughtered,
the wild horses all tamed, 
the secret corners of the forest are heavy 
with the scent of many men, 
and the view of the ripe hills blotted by talking wires. 
Where is the thicket?  Gone. 
Where is the eagle?  Gone. 
And what is it to say goodbye 
to the swift pony and the hunt? 
The end of living and the beginning of survival. 
…我們不懂------ 
當所有的野牛均被屠殺； 
所有的野馬都被馴服； 
森林所有幽秘的角落都充滿了人的汗味； 
當豐饒的山坡都被電話線所污染； 
人生還是什麼人生？ 
灌木叢哪裡去了？ 不見了。 
老鷹哪裡去了？ 不見了。 
向奔馳的野馬說再見，向狩獵的日子說再見，
這又算什麼呢？
這是人生的結束，偷生的開始。
